The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Centrepoint’s Camberwell Foyer Centre in south east London. Centrepoint works with homeless young people, and during the visit the Duke and Duchess baked mince pies and decorated cookies, participated in activities including visiting a training session on employment opportunities, toured the facilities and talked to those who benefit from the charity. Centrepoint was Prince William’s first royal patronage, since 2005, which he picked up from his mother Diana who was a patron from 1992 until her death in 1997.
The young couple delighted those who met them. Kate made Tasha Barbi, who turned 18 the day before a birthday cookie: “Kate said, ‘this is for your birthday, your birthday cookie’. I love it, I’m never eating it.” But the real highlight of the night was when Prince William asked Vanessa Boateng, 18, a trainee nursery nurse, about whether his royal wedding suit had been “dapper.” Once she replied “Your swag was on point”, William responded “Swag?” and then danced brushing off his lapels.
The charity’s chief executive Seyi Obakin said about Prince William: “[He] has always said he doesn’t want to be a stand-off patron. He takes a keen interest in what’s going on and we keep him regularly briefed. For someone of his ilk of his own accord to come and meet them is a powerful motivator. I’ve seen William talk to people, meet them six months later and ask them what progress they’ve made. That’s hugely powerful for young people.”
